N.18 - CRYSTAL PALACE FIRE 2005 - 30 May 2005

DRAMATIC FIRE NEAR THE MUSEUM

At about 5:30pm today, this bank holiday Monday, a large fire broke out in the area used for general storage near the Crystal Palace Museum.

In a very short time Melvyn Harrison, from the Crystal Palace Foundation (who operate the Museum), was directing a fire engine through the Museum gates on their approach from Anerley Hill.

This was nothing like the 1936 conflagration when 90 fire engines were required to fight the fire.

Fortunately no-one was injured today, no buildings were damaged, but some damage was sustained by the containers alongside the fire.

Fearce heat at the heart of the flames

The fire fighters tackle the swirling smoke and flames

A familiar shape emerges from the ashes

Finishing the job - a lady looks on

.....she has seen it before!
