"The Demise of the Multiplex" [my title - Ed.]

Bromley Council today announced it will notify London and Regional Properties (LandR) of its intention to terminate the agreement to develop the derelict site of the former Crystal Palace as LandR have failed to complete the Lease within the prescribed period. The Council will now take legal advice on the ramifications of this decision, including any claims the Council may have against LandR.

A joint statement issued by Cllr. Chris Maines, Leader of the Liberal-Democratic Party, Cllr. John Holbrook, Leader of the Labour Party and Cllr Michael Tickner, Leader of the Conservative Party states:

'We are extremely disappointed that we have to take this step, which will mean that the leisure amenities and the hundreds of jobs they would have generated will not now be realised, despite the fact that none of the legal challenges against the Council's actions in granting planning permission for the development have been upheld.'

'We should not lose sight of the fact that the regeneration scheme has already achieved a tremendous amount. Over 50 regeneration projects, including valued training and employment projects are successfully being delivered in local communities. We will be talking to the London Development Agency to ensure the continuation of this valuable work, and would also like to thank all those groups in the business and community forums for their support of the regeneration scheme.'

The Council will be considering the longer-term future of the site in due course. However, in the immediate future the site will continue to be secured until a risk assessment is carried out in respect of access.

The current restoration of Crystal Palace Park will continue, and discussions with Sport England to refurbish the National Sports Centre are well advanced.
